In a press release, the audacious IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, on Sunday October 22, 2017 stated and I quote verbatim culled from Ynaija :

“We are asking Major General Muhammadu Buhari, Nnia Nwodo and south-east governors to produce Nnamdi Kanu because they or their representatives all participated in countless meetings in Abuja and Enugu where modus operandi of the genocidal Operation Python Dance II was agreed and ratified. It was as a direct result of military invasion of the home of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and massacre of 28 innocent unarmed civilians with many missing that has led us to once again politely ask that our leader be presented to us dead or alive. It is becoming clear to everybody that Muhammadu Buhari, Nnia Nwodo and south-east governors are desperately trying to draw IPOB into armed confrontation and militancy to justify their genocidal clampdown on innocent people of the south-est and south -south. Should they continue to defy the laws of natural justice and fair play by not releasing our leader, they may get their wish in no distant time.”

“As the architects of Python Dance II, Nnia Nwodo and south-east governors are under moral obligation to disclose to Igbo people in particular and Biafrans in general the whereabouts of IPOB leader or have themselves to blame. We are therefore advising all those culpable in the abduction of our leader, his parents and death of dozens of IPOB family members in Abia and Rivers state to please release our leader to us before things get out of hand.”

This press release by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is not good news. I’m really perplexed and so should every Igbo man and woman home and abroad.

While I am sympathetic to IPOB and believe in a sovereign state of Biafra as a better alternative to the present Nigeria state except it under goes restructuring or Igbo presidency is realized on or before May 29th, 2023, I will unequivocally state that I will not support ARMED STRUGGLE for Biafra agitation. The consequences of such a drastic measure are ominous. I can write a book on the calamity it portends but let me start by reminding boisterous Emma Powerful that such an extremist posture will indeed brandish IPOB as the terrorist group which it has been labelled by the present administration. The goodwill which it currently enjoys outside the borders of the Nigeria state from foreign governments will evaporate within days of such dangerous venture and the lives of IPOB members in different countries of the world would be in jeopardy.

Bringing this back home, we should not be carried away and envisage the militancy which pervades the Niger Delta where militants target oil facilities and installations in a bid to disrupt the economy which has worked successfully in taming the federal government monster that refuses to yield to reason as a model for any armed struggle by IPOB. While separatist movements are known to have taken up arms against the state such as in Colombia, Basque country, Northern Ireland and other places, such armed resistance spells doom for the people of South East. History of armed resistances reeks of blood and strife, militias, rape, hunger, starvation and retrogression. Armed struggle in central Africa has been the bane of underdevelopment. The Boko Haram terrorism which Nigeria is yet to recover from CANNOT be a model for IPOB to emulate as both movements are parallel to each other in ideology. IPOB is politically motivated while Boko Haram preys on religious ideology to visit mayhem on Nigerians.

In the event of any armed conflict in the South East, the President Muhammed Buhari’s administration which has demonstrated how it can militarize the region will stop at nothing to use the guise of ending IPOB armed struggle to perpetuate genocide on the South East. The recent Operation Python Dance II, a continuation of the first phase of the military war games in a peaceful region since the civil war would be the new state of our homeland.

I hope Powerful’s statements remains a mere and sarcastic threat like that made by Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB Leader, before his home was invaded, that he was going to Abuja to come back with Buhari’s head. I hope IPOB and Emma Powerful know the full implications of armed struggle for Igbo land and that we CANNOT as a people take up arms under the present circumstances. We cannot afford to plunge the South East into war. The future of our children will be jeopardized and commerce, the lifeblood of our people will be taken many decades backwards and wealth built from the 20 pounds sterling handed to our parents after the war destroyed. I call on all Igbo youths to call on IPOB to rescind any plans for armed struggle and continue on the path of peaceful agitations.
